Putting an electric blanket on a bed is not complicated, but it is easy to get wrong in a way that affects safety and comfort. The correct method is simple: place it flat on the mattress, under the bottom sheet, with the controller cord near the pillow side. This keeps the heating wires evenly distributed, prevents the blanket from sliding, and gives you a stable temperature through the night. The label should face up, and the blanket should be smooth with no folds or creases.
When you put an electric blanket between the mattress and the bottom sheet, the sheet still lets some air pass through but keeps the heating wires from touching your skin. Heat rises to your body evenly because the blanket is not compressed by a heavy duvet.
If you place it on top of the duvet instead, the blanket is exposed to movement and gets twisted while you sleep. The controller cord also becomes an obstruction. That is why the manufacturer's instruction is usually the same: under the sheet, label side up, with the straps secured at the corners.

Its under-sheet design and corner straps ensure even coverage, making it a practical choice for your sleep setup.View Product →
The straps or corner loops on most electric blankets are designed for standard mattress thickness. Wrap them around the mattress corners and check that the blanket still has about the same amount of material on both sides. If one side is looser than the other, the heating wires may bunch near the edge, which reduces coverage.
| Placement | How it behaves | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| On the mattress, under the sheet | Stays flat, straps anchor it, warmth radiates through the sheet | Best for all-night use |
| On top of the duvet or quilt | Slides and bunches easily, cord may get caught | Only for short pre-warm |
| Under the mattress pad or topper | Adds a thick barrier between the blanket and your body | Not recommended unless the model is rated for this |
Give yourself enough time to smooth out the blanket. A quick installation often means a controller placed on the wrong side or a strap that is too tight.
After the first 20 minutes, check whether the heat feels even from the top to the bottom of the bed. Some cold spots can come from a strap pulling one side. If you notice that the blanket is not lying flat, turn it off, unplug it, and reposition it before using it again.
Even a well-fitted blanket needs a quick inspection before you rely on it every night. The heating wires are usually made of metal or carbon-fiber, and they are flexible. Folding or creasing them in the same spot for a long time can break a wire or damage the insulation.
Most electric blankets use between 60 and 120 watts. For a 100 W blanket running for 8 hours, that is roughly 0.8 kWh per night, which is inexpensive in most places, but the temperature matters more than the running cost. The controller should feel slightly warm to the touch. If it becomes too hot to hold, disconnect the blanket and contact support. A hot controller can mean the blanket is drawing more power than expected.
Placement starts with size. A blanket that is larger than the mattress bunches under the fitted sheet and leaves thick ridges. A blanket that is smaller than the mattress may pull on the straps, or it may not reach the corners properly. Measure the mattress width and length before buying, and check the controller cord length.
Dual-control blankets are helpful if you share the bed, because each person can adjust their own side. This also makes placement easier, since the controller cable comes out on the side where the outlet is. If your bed is against a wall, pick a model with a side-specific cord so you can route it cleanly to the nearest outlet.
Also think about the mattress thickness. A deep mattress or a mattress with a thick pillow top will need longer straps. If you often change bedding, choose a blanket that is easy to attach and remove; otherwise, this chore will slip into a habit of not placing it correctly.
After a full season of use, an electric blanket can collect dust and skin oils. To keep it hygienic, remove the controller and power cord first. Most blankets can be washed on a gentle cool cycle by hand or machine, but always check the product label. Do not use fabric softener or bleach, and avoid dry cleaning because the solvents can damage the wiring insulation.
When drying, lay the blanket flat or hang it over a line. Do not use a tumble dryer on high heat or place a hot iron on it. For storage, roll it loosely and put the controller next to it. Avoid folding it along the same lines every time, because those folds become weak points over time.
If you are not sure whether the controller, coupler, or straps on your model are set up correctly, contact our support team and we will help you confirm the fitting for your bed.
